History of The League

League History:

The League of Catholic Women was founded in 1911.  During our first two years, we founded and staffed the Margaret Berry Settlement House for emigrants, founded and staffed St. Mary's Home for Girls, founded and staffed St. Joseph's Home for unmarried, widowed, and abandoned women and children.  League members were representatives at all Juvenile Court Sessions, staffed Traveler's Aid desks and taught Sunday school at the Boys' Detention Home.

In the past 90 years, the League has been involved in literally hundreds of programs from war relief work, to group homes for boys and girls, to health and educational programs.  Today we are 700 members strong and are involved in nine separate programs to help our community.

Our work today takes us wherever the needs are greatest and where we feel best able to help.  Our aim is to build hope for those in need, to build faith in our members and to build charity for all in everything we do.

Membership:

Without the dedicated work of volunteers, the League and its community outreach could not exist. Volunteer opportunities with the League include, but are not limited to:

• Direct one on-one work with women working to get their lives on track
• Tutoring elementary school children
• Helping women, looking for work, dress to make that First Impression
• Procuring clothing for the First Impression program
• Calling for a variety of committees
• Facilitating workshops
• Planning for community service projects
• Planning for membership programs
• Hostessing events
• Mentoring both internally and people in social service projects
• Raising money to support the work of the League
